2-8 Global 1-Day Event From Kobe to Jamaica

On September 12, 2014, the students of Global class 2-8, along with two foreign exchange students from Australia and Portugal, experienced a day of history and cultural experience.

In the morning the students visited the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake Memorial (人と防災未来センタ) where they were able to witness a reenactment of the disaster in 1995, as well as listen and read several testimonies given by some of the survivors. It was a great opportunity for them to really understand the dangers and tragic effects that earthquakes can have. For the foreign exchange students, it was a meaningful lesson in some of the recent history of Kobe, the city they are living in.

In the afternoon, all of the students were given a crash course in Jamaican culture. For lunch, they visited a local Jamaican restaurant. There they witnessed and took part in a cooking lesson of one of Jamaica’s common, yet famous, dishes. It is called “festival”; sweet bread made from cornmeal that is deep-fried. Along with this bread, they were able to enjoy a delicious meal of Jamaica’s most popular dish, Jerk Chicken. While at the restaurant, they also took part in a quiz game about Jamaican culture, and watched a Jamaican film, “One Love”, giving them the opportunity to see the beautiful island and the lifestyle of its people.

This day was really enjoyable and one that they will remember for years to come.
